PVC Furniture Plans

PVC Furniture Plans

PVC what? Yes you heard it right. You can build furniture projects from PVC pipe. This product makes great outdoor furniture and is quick and easy to build with. Basically you only need a few hand tools to build projects from this versatile product. A set of PVC furniture plans, a hand saw, a tape measure and some sandpaper or a file are pretty much all the tools that you will need.

Of course if you really want to build a lot of furniture there are some optional tools that will make the work smoother and faster. You can use a miter box to make sure you are getting good straight cuts. Another option for cutting is a ratcheting hand cutter that you can buy at most good hardware stores.

To get started on a project review your PVC furniture plans and take note of the lengths of pipe that you will need for the project. Make sure you have all the materials that you need on hand before starting your project.

Measuring and cutting:
Cut the longest pieces for your project first, this will allow more efficient use of the pipe.
Measure and mark with a pencil where you want to make your cut.
Either cut with your handsaw or use the miter box or (if you have one your ratcheting cutter).
If you use a saw to make your cuts, use either a file or sandpaper to clean up the cut. Make sure that you clean the cutting feathers completely.
If you use a power miter box to make your cuts make sure you do so in a well ventilated area and wear a dust mask or respirator.

Before starting your cuts re-check your PVC furniture plans and make sure that you have all of your measurements correct. If it will help you in remembering where each part goes number the pieces.
After all your pieces of pipe are cut and cleaned it’s time for some assembly.

A suggestion here, dry fit your project together first. DO NOT  use glue at the start. Check your pvc furniture plans and assemble your project without glue first. Make sure that all the parts go together correctly and that your project looks the same as the project in your plans. If you have any fittings that must be turned a certain way it’s a good idea to take your pencil and draw a line about 1 inch both on the fitting and on the piece of pipe.

After you are completely satisfied that all the pieces are cut correctly and go together right, than you can disassemble the project and get ready to start the glue up process. Make sure that all of your joints are clean, pvc cement requires a good clean surface on both the piece of pipe and the connector that you are using. You do not have to use primer to clean the areas just make sure there is no dirt or anything else that would keep the glue from making proper adhesion.

A little glue goes a long ways, so use you glue sparingly. Any big blow outs of glue will need to be removed immediately or it can affect the look of your project at the end. As you glue each joint hold the joint in place for a few seconds to allow the glue to cure.

You can make a lot of very nice projects by following your pvc furniture plans and taking your time to make sure everything is done correctly. I can almost see that chair setting on my deck now.
